CCS 2018 GUIDELINES FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF ATRIAL FIBRILLATION: 2018 UPDATE

In this workshop session, members of the AF Guidelines Panel will present key messages from the 2018 update and highlight new evidence. Members will use example cases to discuss: (1) risk factor modification for AF, (2) AF and cardioversion (timing of cardioversion, use of NOACs before and after cardioversion, etc.), (3) antithrombotic management of patients with AF and coronary artery disease, and (4) OAC therapy; including ablation, antidotes, and subclinical AF.

CANADA’S FIRST RECOMMENDATION FOR THE CARDIOVASCULAR SCREENING AND CARE OF ATHLETES PROGRAM (CCS AND CHRS JOINT POSITION STATEMENT)

In this workshop session, position statement authors will present key messages from the 2018 position statement including: (1) The elements of cardiovascular screening such as: the history, physical examination and the 12-lead electrocardiogram (2) The importance of an open discussion including shared decision making, choice awareness and evaluating all options (3) Secondary prevention of SCD including the building of a foundation fully equipped to deal with cardiovascular emergencies through protocols, policy, and AED implementation.

As the most common sustained arrhythmia in patients with HF, AF negatively impacts both symptoms and mortality. The Canadian Heart Failure Society (CHFS) and Canadian Heart Rhythm Society (CHRS) have developed a Mini-Debate Series to tackle three of the most recent, relevant and controversial topics affecting the management of patients with these two coexisting conditions.

CHRS SPOTLIGHT: WHO SHOULDN’T GET A DEFIBRILLATOR? ICD RISK STRATIFICATION IN 2018

The primary topic of this workshop is to both address the benefit of ICD therapy in patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy ("the DANISH trial, how has it changed practice") and, more importantly to integrate this into the risk stratification of patients considered for ICD therapy.
